COVID-19 Updates

Travel Authorization for Attorneys and Staff Members

Supreme Court of Alabama Chief Justice Tom Parker on Friday issued a travel authorization document for attorneys and employees of the judicial branch. We've gotten many questions about whether that applies to non-attorney staff members and legal secretaries. The Alabama State Bar has developed a document you can provide your employees, as well as a sample letter, should you rather personalize it for your own law firm, that states the sections of the Governor's Stay-at-Home Order that allows for employees of "essential services" to engage in travel.

May's Wellness Month More Important Than Ever

As you may be aware, the state bar has a task force that seeks to promote attorney wellness and quality of life. President Christy Crow created the task force to address the growing incidences of depression, substance abuse, and physical and mental health problems among attorneys in Alabama and across the nation. The goal is to raise awareness of these problems and encourage both dialogue and action to promote better wellness among attorneys. The new challenges associated with the Coronavirus make the work of this task force all the more important.

In addition to a number of other initiatives this year, the Wellness Task Force is organizing an Attorney Wellness Month for the month of May. There are plans for a free, online wellness CLE, a wellness challenge calendar promoting daily wellness activities among attorneys, and the dissemination of wellness tips and other quality of life literature to members of the state bar. Stay tuned for more details soon!
