ASB Annual Award Nominations Deadline This Month

The deadline to submit nominations for awards given at the bar's Annual Meeting in July is fast approaching. Click here to view the awards, respective criteria and past winners.

The Board of Bar Commissioners of the Alabama State Bar will receive nominations for the William D.”Bill” Scruggs, Jr. Service to the Bar Award, J. Anthony “Tony” McLain Professionalism Award and Judicial Award of Merit through March 15.

Alabama Law Foundation grantee SHORT the Squirrel promotes literacy across the state

SHORT the SquirrelNew literacy mascot SHORT the Squirrel, who has been endorsed by Governor Kay Ivey, reached 1,100 Alabama classrooms and over 22,000 children through a virtual reading pep rally last Monday.  This event was a prelude to the statewide launch of SHORT in Court helping educate and entertain children who are spending long hours in the courtroom.  
 
SHORT the Squirrel has been invited to attend the Alabama District Attorney Association on Mar. 9, to educate community leaders about the program. Those in attendance will be able to pick up the literacy kits to take back to their counties for immediate use.

2021 Legislative Update: Week Three Summary and Bill Tracking

After taking a week off to assess COVID-19 protocols in place during the first two weeks of the session, the Alabama Legislature returned on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

The Alabama State Bar provides status reports and summaries of legislative activity that may be of interest to our members. We divide legislation into the following categories for your convenience: criminal, domestic relations, judicial, court costs, elections ethics and government relations (EEGR), civil/ general and tax. Bankruptcy at the Beach

The Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section of the Alabama State Bar has moved the date of its CLE seminar from early June to Friday, Sept. 10-11, 2021. This year, the seminar will be held at The Henderson Resort in Destin, Florida.

Notice For Appointment of A New U. S. Magistrate Judge

The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a fulltime U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Alabama in Birmingham. The current annual salary of the position is $201,112. The term of office is eight years. A full public notice and the application forms for the magistrate judge position are available on the court’s websiteApplications must be received by Mar. 19, 2021.

2021 Virtual Alabama Law Review Symposium
