ASB Annual Award Nominations Deadline This Month

The Board of Bar Commissioners of the Alabama State Bar will receive nominations for the William D.”Bill” Scruggs, Jr. Service to the Bar Award, J. Anthony “Tony” McLain Professionalism Award and Judicial Award of Merit through March 15.
Alabama Law Foundation grantee SHORT the Squirrel promotes literacy across the state
New literacy mascot SHORT the Squirrel, who has been endorsed by Governor Kay Ivey, reached 1,100 Alabama classrooms and over 22,000 children through a virtual reading pep rally last Monday. This event was a prelude to the statewide launch of SHORT in Court helping educate and entertain children who are spending long hours in the courtroom.
SHORT the Squirrel has been invited to attend the Alabama District Attorney Association on Mar. 9, to educate community leaders about the program. Those in attendance will be able to pick up the literacy kits to take back to their counties for immediate use.

2021 Legislative Update: Week Three Summary and Bill Tracking
After taking a week off to assess COVID-19 protocols in place during the first two weeks of the session, the Alabama Legislature returned on Tuesday, Feb. 23.

Bankruptcy at the Beach
The Bankruptcy and Commercial Law Section of the Alabama State Bar has moved the date of its CLE seminar from early June to Friday, Sept. 10-11, 2021. This year, the seminar will be held at The Henderson Resort in Destin, Florida.

Notice For Appointment of A New U. S. Magistrate Judge
The Judicial Conference of the United States has authorized the appointment of a fulltime U.S. Magistrate Judge for the Northern District of Alabama in Birmingham. The current annual salary of the position is $201,112. The term of office is eight years. A full public notice and the application forms for the magistrate judge position are available on the court’s website. Applications must be received by Mar. 19, 2021.

Birmingham Bar Virtual CLE: Insights from Tenth Judicial Circuit Judges
Throughout the COVID pandemic, the Judges of the Tenth Judicial Circuit have kept the judicial system running safely and effectively. Through creative uses of technology and through carefully developed, closely followed in-person safety protocols, Judges have conducted hearings, non-jury trials and even a couple of jury trials. Hosted by the Birmingham Bar Association Court Liaison Committee.
The symposium, entitled Ten Years of the Supreme Court’s Personal Jurisdiction Revival, will explore the Court’s recent decisions and the questions they raise going forward. The symposium will feature renowned scholars, including a keynote address by Arthur Miller of New York University School of Law, and experienced practitioners, including Sean Marotta and Deepak Gupta, who argued the Ford cases—the Supreme Court’s latest foray into personal jurisdiction—this Term.
