Coping with Stress During the Holidays

The holiday season can create an increased level of stress, anxiety and depression. Calendars become jam-packed with events, family gatherings can cause extra tension, and then there's the accompanying sprint to wrap up end-of-year client work. Jeremy Rakes, the Alabama State Bar's Director of the Alabama Lawyers Assistance Program, offers these tips to cope with the seasonal stress by keeping yourself physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy.

Physical Health

  • Physical activity/exercise

  • Healthy diet

  • Adequate sleep

  • Focused breathing

Mental Health

  • Examine priorities / “How important is it?”

  • Time management

  • Delegate (if possible)

  • Write / Journal

Emotional Health

  • Engage in “fun” activities and traditions

  • Manage expectations

  • Surround yourself with positive people

  • Set appropriate boundaries

  • Learn to say “no”

  • Focused breathing

  • Reach out to others

Wellness and Ethics CLE

Join the Quality of Life, Health and Wellness Committee for a free CLE: A Perspective on Health and Wellness for Lawyers and Judges and Ethical Considerations. The course has been approved for 1.0 CLE including an ethics credit.

Reminder: MCLE Deadline Dec. 31

You are required to receive at least 12.0 total MCLE credits, including at least 1.0 Ethics credits each license year. Courses must be completed no later than Dec. 31, 2021, and reported no later than Feb. 15, 2022.
