2024 Legislative Session: May 7-9

Legislative Summary

In the closing week of the 2024 Legislative Session, legislators met for three session days, and the pace alternated between periods of activity and waiting. Ultimately, the session concluded without much fanfare in a routine sine die. Despite completing the 30-day session, some lingering questions remain.

During this session, the House of Representatives saw the introduction of 494 bills, while the Senate introduced 347 bills.

Regarding the bills passed in the final week, those reaching the Governor’s desk less than five days before the session’s end may be signed into law within ten days after adjournment. Failure to approve such bills within this timeframe results in what is known as a “pocket veto,” the most definitive form of veto as the Legislature lacks the opportunity to reconsider the vetoed measure.

Ascertaining the final status and enactments of bills passed in the last week may take up to 10 days. We will provide another comprehensive update and summary once the status of all bills is finalized.

As always, the Alabama State Bar encourages all members to be aware of legislation that may impact court costs and fees. Access to justice is a priority. Please be aware of advertisements that may be occurring for local bills and those that may already be filed to use the courts as a fundraiser for non-court entities. We encourage you to be informed and notify us as well.
