While the Supreme Court of Alabama retains ultimate authority to regulate the legal profession, the Alabama State Bar’s Office of the General Counsel serves as the Court’s arm to investigate and prosecute claims that a lawyer has violated the Rules of Professional Conduct. The Office of General Counsel is organized into the following separate divisions headed by General Counsel Roman A. Shaul.
Ethics Division
Ethics Division provides confidential informal ethics advice to members of the Alabama State Bar and assists the General Counsel and Disciplinary Commission in the preparation of formal ethics opinions.
Disciplinary Division
Disciplinary Division serves as the Alabama Supreme Court’s arm to investigate and prosecute claims that a lawyer has violated the Rules of Professional Conduct.
