City of Opelika - Deputy City Attorney

The City of Opelika, Alabama is seeking qualified applicants for the temporary, short term and full-time position of City Attorney. This temporary position ends on November 3, 2025, when the Deputy City Attorney is expected to assume the role of City Attorney.

This position is a temporary, short-term and full-time position designed to prepare the employee to assume the role of City Attorney. This position is classified as exempt and is not subject to the Fair Labor Standards Act’s overtime requirements. The Deputy City Attorney is a professional position reporting directly to and supervised by the City Attorney. This position is responsible for assisting the City Attorney in providing legal support to the Mayor, City Council, City Departments and related City Boards and Committees. The Deputy City Attorney works on all aspects of municipal law as assigned by the City Attorney. Work is performed within the framework of established policies and requires considerable responsibility, initiative and judgment. The employee is expected to perform duties with minimal supervision. The Deputy City Attorney must be skillful in managing situations requiring diplomacy, fairness and sound judgment.

Minimum qualifications for the position:

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university
  • Graduation from an accredited school of law with a juris doctorate degree
  • Licensed to practice law in the State of Alabama
  • Membership in good standing with the Alabama State Bar
  • Seven (7) years of professional experience as a practicing attorney, including trial experience
  • Applicants are required to submit to a background check as a condition of employment
  • Final candidates must pass a pre-employment drug-screening test.
  • Must possess a valid Alabama Driver’s License.

The starting pay range for this position is $139,568 to $153,525, depending on qualifications, experience and overall career history. The City of Opelika provides a comprehensive benefits package to all classified employees, including participation in the Alabama Employees’ Retirement System (ERS).
